Speaking and Listening

“I find it difficult to listen when I’m no longer interested in the subject, or if I’m in a bad mood, or if I’ve got worries and like, but when you go to work you have to leave all that behind so you can progress in your job”

Student

Most of us have no problem speaking and listening when we are talking about something we love with our mates, but there is a real difference between “banter” and being able to communicate effectively in a formal work setting – especially when we have to talk to strangers ! Funny that,  when we were kids we were told not to speak to strangers, but in a work setting customers will start off being strangers and we need to learn to speak professionally to everyone we come in contact with.

This module and the Challenge sheets we’ve created will help you see the importance of good speaking and listening skills in the work place and how to get good at understanding others (and where they are coming from !) We’ve also recorded some young people who have just started work who talk about speaking and listening here →
